I voted yes because I have wanted something like this to be implemented for a long time now. I think that something like this would make the site more approachable to new users, which would result in more users staying active on the forum.
However, I'm not sure that the profile is the best place to put this. I don't even think that I bothered to look at my profile for the first several months. As mentioned above, I voted yes on the welcome message suggestion, and I think that an automatic message would be the best way of doing this. Both are good ideas so both have my yes.
