Wouldn't a "show code" button on every post work as a better multi-purpose solution? That way you wouldn't even have to trim off the quote tags in an active thread when updating any sort of list.
Have it open up a small dialogue box or a new window, or open to something similar to the 'preview post' function when making a new thread, but just have it display raw text.
It wouldn't have to be a large button like reply, etc, but something inconspicuous like the gold form button, or the online icon.. or you could just have it up with on the link section with "quote"
And of course it wouldn't be unusable like the quote option once a thread's been closed.
