Instant messenger requires JAVA to be turned on. Obviously that's not the case for me as I would prefer avoiding security issues on my computer.

In addition, JAVA is unavailable on tablets and phones, making it impossible to receive instant messages and thus no sound upon friend requests.

The sound on my computer is also turned off. This avoids the surprise of stupid ads and instant videos on random sites, where loud noise is the norm with video that initiate without my agreement.

Because of the these three factors, I can't confirm whether I get a sound for a request as a result of instant messenger being turned on.
