1: is a good idea, notifaction.
2: If you activate this there will be some sort of changing in the jsp-user-name, f.ex: Add a emotionic at the end of name. - Well, I'd say no to this, but ppl will notice of course, cuz there is a emotionic in the nick, and what users allways look at is the username + pm icon.
3: ppl would forget? I wouldn't forget if I had this activated or not, and f.ex: if the pm icon is Yellow(Away) It means he is away from keyboard.
Easy options, Easy noticing it, and easy activate/deactivate.

Ehm? The notifaction about "this user is away ......." is option 1.. But I'm not sure if I understood what you wanted to say.
