I believe, not just editting but also to rid the "cannot revive old topics" restriction.
Why are we restricted to use our blogs within a time frame before it is not allowed to be posted anymore.

Reason:

Blogs are for what is on your mind at that time, or how your feeling at that time. Unlimited time for edits really seems to defeat the purpose, if you feel differently about whatever you blogged you should start a new blog so that others can see that you've changed, or have more information regarding the said topic.

It says if you editted or not so when you check a blog you'll be able to tell if the information is new or not, some people use it as a log and there isn't a single way to make a thread with info you can always edit.
