Voted Yes. Both of these ideas are great, honestly and will enhance a primary feature of the site.
#1 simply makes sense from an ease-of-use standpoint in my opinion, especially since we already have the unread option.
#2 can definitely cause confusion if you aren't paying close attention. Simply greying out that box would alleviate all confusion possible in my opinion.
Good luck!
How is marking msgs read and not reading them good on our site ? If someone gets a pm and takes a few days to respond to it that is okay, and many people just cannot response to a msg all the time. As is if you are interested in the msg, you open it up, and sometimes it is on a new tab. Simply refreshing the pm page will then show all msgs as read. IMHO this feature would be used in sense that one cannot read pms or refresh a page, had no intentions of responding to pms, and more. It could also lead to mass pming across our site with members who do not actually engage in conversation and more during pms.
No need to add another feature to make this feature work. It is getting to complicated, it is changing multiple parts of the system, and it will have an affect across the whole site.
If this was an email service then I would understand this being implemented, but it's not.
