Took me about 30 seconds:

You said it yourself:

The vast majority (72.1%) of this site's users are not American.

There is no science behind what you are saying. Look up any model of lexical semantics and how it is processed (e.g. Stackhouse and Wells, Hans-Werner Hunziker): we do not parse text by mentally blocking out every other adjacent word, that makes no sense at all.

The disadvantage is that you cater to a tiny minority for shallow nationalistic reasons, as per your own your own post in said subforum wishing to - as the thread is entitled - 'push American values' (HERE).

For what it is worth, and because you asked, I honestly consider this very petty.

Your statistics don't seem to match mine. I'll have to find the discrepancy. Thank you for posting yours.

I never suggested that we "block out every word." We DO read the subforums as a list and we tend to only read the first two words or so to get the idea. Soccer vs. Football is far more discriminatory than World Football vs. Football. That's my point.

How is it shallow and nationalistic? Soccer lovers SHOULD be put in their place. At the top (in this case, before). I think they should be rewarded for their passion.

It definitely makes more sense to change the name, given historical precedent.

It isn't like us Americans just invented the name "soccer", it is a British term and shorter than the original name of "Association Football". It was called this because there are literally dozens of games people have played over the past couple thousand years called football, not all of them being soccer either.

Besides, football exists, everybody knows what real football is. It would really clear up a lot of confusion if we called soccer by its real name on the forums here.

Stating that most users are American is not refuted by stating most users are not American when all demographics are minorities. We can just as easily state "most users are not Canadian, or British, or French" accurately, but it does not take away from the fact that Americans comprise the largest demographic on the site. Additionally, Canadians are most likely to call the sport soccer too, and between Americans and Canadians they comprise an absolute majority of the site's users too.

That is an excellent point that bring up regarding Canada. According to Wikipedia, people in Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia use the term "football" and "soccer" interchangeably. Perhaps it's due to the fact that those aforementioned countries have a strong gridiron presence.

For those of you in favor of the status quo, what is the advantage of it?

Also, the Japanese call it "sakka"

We have a strong majority here. What percentage is necessary for the change? How many people must vote?

Australia calls
Aussie rules football - football
Soccer - soccer / some pure soccer fans could call it football too
'Gridiron' - rugby
