Most sites usually focus on growth and try to deal with the fringe "problems" .
By putting obligatory phone verification, it will severely limit the new users registration.It will curb some of the multies and make them a bit easier to find etc.
The issue is that any registration restriction will drive many new user away. This is a fringe forum,badmouthed by 99% of youtubers/twitch streamers/blizz forum/bnet chat.
Imagine a new user trying to figgure out wtf is this jsp, and then the site asking them to first verify with their actual phone number... I don't think that will go down well with manynew users trying to figgure out if they are even interested in this forum.

You can't just..put your passwords on a piece of paper? Or why do you need these extra steps?
I've never needed a recovery email and I've been a member over 20 years.

Sadly authenticator/phone won't become a thing. It's already been turned down a couple of times

Voted yes to linking a phone number. Great idea.

I wasn't saying it should be required. It would be nice to have additional verification options aside from email.

Basically just a field to put your phone number in if you so choose.
Then during recovery process you would put the number in that way. Requiring it for login auth is something else entirely.

Just another "thing" you could provide to help recover your account

Optionally/additionally cool to reset PW via text ofc

we get calls from fake #s from telemarketers and scammers everyday at work.

biometric would be way better.
