first step is to factor.

8x^4-2x^2-1=0
(4x^2+1)(2x^2-1) = 0

set each piece to 0.
(4x^2+1) = 0
(2x^2-1) = 0

i assume you can take it from here

(2x^2 - 1)(4x^2 + 1) = 0

x^2 = 1/2 --> x = sqrt(1/2)
x^2 = -1/4 ---> reject, not real
