I must fill in the blank with the correct conjugation of the correct verb. I've identified the correct verbs, but I cannot figure out the correct conjugation (preterit, imperfect, imperfect progressive) and it's driving me nuts.

Donde (estar) usted ayer entra las dos y las tres de la tarde?
Que (hacer) usted cuando el Sr. Gonzalez llamo a casa?
Yo (leer) el periodico
(conocer) usted al Sr. Gonzalez?
Cuando (saber) usted que el Sr. Gonzalez queria robar en su casa?
Que (hacer) usted despues de ver la pistola?
Yo (querer) irme, pero el Sr. Gonzalez no lo permito.
Como (poder) usted escapar?
El Sr. Gonzalez (tener) mucha hambre y empezo a comer. Entonces yo (irse).

I cannot for the life of me get these right, and am losing faith. It tells me when I am wrong and I can start over, but that's it.

¿Que hacía usted cuando el Sr. Gonzalez llamó a casa? (other options could work, this seems more likely)
Yo leía el periodico (other options could work, this seems more likely)
¿Conocía usted al Sr. Gonzalez? (other options could work, this seems more likely)
¿Cuando supo usted que el Sr. Gonzalez quería robar en su casa?
¿Que hizo usted después de ver la pistola?
Yo quería irme, pero el Sr. Gonzalez no lo permitió.
¿Como pudo usted escapar?
El Sr. Gonzalez tenía mucha hambre y empezó a comer. Entonces yo me fui.

Corrected some spelling there, and added question marks as well.
Mr Gonzales is a handful, btw (shouldn't it be González?).

This, except it's probably "yo quise irme", as in he made an attempt to leave. Either one makes sense but textbooks/classes tend to focus on the preterite here to convey the idea of trying as opposed to wanting.
