√2 is irrational.

√2 x √2 = 2.

2 is rational.

Seems a little narrow. You could choose root 2 and root 3 and get an irrational.

In order to disprove a statement, you just need to find one counterexample and feanur's answer does exactly this. He found two irrational numbers whose product is rational. Only thing OP might want to show is that √2 is actually irrational
