1. Why is Julius Caesar often called the first Emperor of Rome? How did Caesar’s life not only symbolize the troubles of the Roman Republic but symbolize the shaping of the position of Emperor?
2. Though initially stabilized by Octavian the Roman Empire faced a number of troubles that would ultimately ensure its destruction. Discuss at least five of these troubles. Make sure in your discussion that you reference the strengths and weaknesses of the position of emperor as well as the role immigration played in the Empire’s downfall.
3. What was the legacy of Rome on the peoples of Europe? How devastated were they in the aftermath of the fall of Rome? Could it be fair to say that even though the era certainly was traumatic life actually continued on as normal for many people? Explain.
