how did you guys memorize and distinguish between them?

not really, took it 6-7 years ago ;'/ iirc i mainly just listened in lecture and reviewed book for rest. first semester i tried more memorization but ended up doing better second semester where i tried more to understand why certain reactions proceed in the ways they did
