So we want to create deductive statements such that IF the premises were true, the conclusion would logically follow.

For example:

If I were to go to work today, then I would be too tired to go to the gym later.

Note how the preceding If clause results in the THEN statement which drives to a conclusion based on the former.

Some more examples:

If I drink water, then I won't be thirsty anymore.
If I don't go to school today, then I will be marked absent.
If I don't sleep tonight, then I will fall asleep in class tomorrow.
If I exercise today, then I will be healthier tomorrow.

Here is a non-example:

If I drink water, then I won't be thirsty anymore.

I'm not thirsty anymore.
Therefore, I drank water.

Although the first statement is true, the reversal is not necessarily true since you can quench your thirst without drinking water. For example, you drank some Mountain Dew to quench your thirst. Therefore this can't be called a valid argument.


The key to deduction is starting with something that is true and building upon it so you can form a logical conclusion.
