what does this equal? are you just trying to simplify? is a given or is this equal to 0 and you are trying to find a?

it is -1/2 as long as a=/= 2/√3

= (2+a√3) / (-4-2a√3)
= (2+a√3) / -2.(2 +a√3)
= -1/2
