a negative number + a negative number is a negative number (obviously)
a negative number times a negative number is a positive number because the negative signs cancel out
but a negative number times a positive number is a negative number since negative numbers always overrule positive numbers when it comes to mutliplication

I feel your pain. I just returned to school myself after being out of high school for only 10 years.
These kids have learned math way more advanced then I ever did and they are finding some of this stuff so simple, where I am struggling.
