I have a quick grammar question. I want to know how to best format this sentence:

This experience is one that is important to me and I am glad that I experienced it, because without it, I would not know the true beauty and value of happiness.

Does it need a semicolon or something? I like the way its worded, and I don't want to split it up into two sentences if I don't have to.

This experience is one that is important to me and I am glad that I experienced it; without it, I would not know the true beauty and value of happiness.

use a semi-colon here to separate the 2 independent causes and help the sentence flow better.
or you can just make 2 sentences:

This experience is one that is important to me and I am glad that I experienced it. Without it, I would not know the true beauty and value of happiness.

Is it grammatically correct to split a sentence and then use "it" to refer to a noun from the previous sentence?

First off, I don't know what I am talking about. Just trying to help. :P

Keep in mind that using the semi-colon either cause must form a complete sentence and they must be related.
I don't feel it's appropriate here.

I don't know what the context is but I feel like you should be referencing the experience in past tense.

The experience was one that is important to me. I am glad that I experienced it because without it I would not know the true beauty and value of happiness.

the way you structured it has superfluous words and implications. its better to make it more sophisticated in meaning through simplicity.

the best way to structure this sentence would be

This experience was important to me, and without it, I would not have learned about true beauty or the value of happiness.

although the experience is still important to you, if you phrase it like i did then you have to refer to it has something that happened in the past thus using past tense.

secondly, using the same word multiple times in the same sentence can only be good if you are trying to emphasize something important. in this case, what is important is your attainment of what is true beauty and what is the value of happiness; not the experience itself - because the experience only led you to what is important. thus, its better to shorten it through the removal of certain words that make it too complicated and without good reason.

thirdly, im basing my suggestion only on the sentence you have provided. the structure could and should change significantly depending on what part of the essay or paragraph it is and depending on what sentences follows or comes prior to this one.

my 2cents.

...no comma's are needed and are in fact grammatically incorrect . The word " because " is conjunction enough and creates a perfectly acceptable sentence without the comma's .
