This isn't for homework, it's for my knowledge.

I currently have a 84% in my class and I have my final coming up. My final is worth 250 pts out of the total 1000 for the class (so it's a 1/4 of the grade). I have to get a 70% overall in my class to pass. What is the minimum score I can make on my final to not drop down past the 70% threshold? I have a 14% buffer right now.

Hopefully that makes sense.

I am really struggling on my final and I just want to know what I need to aim for in order to pass the class.

well, 700 out of 1000 is 70%
so you need 700 points total

I think you have 630 points right now
that means you need 70 more points
70 out of 250 is 28%, you need to make about 28 %

...Hopefully that makes sense....

while what you are saying makes sense in principle there is a piece of information missing, namely
what percentage of work has been done so far
'saber_x3' has given you the right answer under the assumption that only the final is outstanding
so does what you have done so far is 84% of 750 points or not?

That makes sense. I mean, all of the coursework is worth certain points. So I guess the only definitive way to do the math is take all the grades I have gotten so far and multiply it by the possible grade attainable and find my "total" points so far.

Edit: just added it all up. I have 610/1000 points right now.

The problem with the above logic is that 610/1000 is clearly not 84%, which means the current average your seeing is out of the amount of points you've attempted. I'm assuming you've completed about 610/726 points towards your grade to equal approximately 84%, although you said you have 250 points left toward the final. You need 90 points out of those 250 to bring your 610 total to 700/1000, so a 36% on your final, but again this is guessing on your points attempted thus far.

Then you don't have an 84%, you have an 81%

so you have an 81% which carries weight .75, and the final worth 250 ponts carries .25 weight

.75*(84) + .25(F) = 100

but your goal is 70

.75*(81.3) + .25(F) = 70

solving for F gives you about 36

so you need a 36% (aka 90 out of 250 points to hit at least a 70% in the class)

Feel free to check this: you have 610 right now, + 90 would give 700/1000 total points which is exactly 70%

substitute any number instead of 70 and solve to find out what you need for anything else.....for example, you'll find to get a B in the class, you will need at least a 76% on your final

an A would require a final score above 100% and is thus not possible

Everyone's answers also assumes this isn't a weighted grading system, and just a strict total point scale as well. ;)

it doesn't really matter how the remaining points are constructed
you will need to get at least 90 more points
if it is only the final to go, then you have to score them there ie 90 out of 250 or 36% as the other posters said

if you have done all the other point worthy exercises you have 81.3% right now
if you have 84% right now, then the total points so far are ~726 and somewhere is an exercise worth ~24 points
there is also the possibility that the total for the year is less than the 1000
but it's not really difficult to work out the remaining points you need
knowing that should not prevent you from trying to gain more ;)

I probably should have mentioned I get 30 points for attendance which is not added until the end of the course. So "technically" I have 640 points.

25% on final to pass then

65% for B

105% for A (so still not possible, unless you do perfect AND there's at least 5 percent extra credit)
