I am starting college in the fall and am really considering civil or chemical engineering. I am aware pursuing a MD in engineering will leave little to no social life, but that's okay because I am used to working a lot. So, anyone currently studying engineering or have already? What can I expect that I might not know now?

By the way, I am from Missouri if that means anything.

Electrical engineering student here, graduating in 2 years

Expect to rework on your studying habits and on your time management. The material isnt easy but if you put enough time studying it should be do-able, and usually the hard part is staying up-to-date with your classes (when u have labs, social life, etc)
Go with the engineering domain that really interests you, but keep in mind that chemical engineering doesnt really study chemistry. Take a look a the classes they offer and you'll see theres not too much chemistry classes in chemical engineering, but generally chemical engineers have the highest starting salary,
although don't make a choice based on that

make sure to graduate with an internship also

http://www.reddit.com/r/engineeringstudents usually has a lot of active engineering students

I don't do Engineering but a friend of a friend does. I'm probably stating the obvious but it's very very difficult, and the hours are longer than most other subjects. Expect as much as 8 hours of work a day (at least in England it is ~8). Very good degree to do though, best of luck !

you honestly don't get into the true core classes till junior/senior year. civil usually has several branches that you can focus more on, like roads or bridges
and yes, chemical eng is not really all chemistry. it's more like chemical processes and applications

So for example, a chemical engineer would help revolutionize cooking? Basically anything that requires chemical processes?

uh, not really sure what you mean by cooking.
but, chem engineers do have a big role in food processing, think of all the vats of chemicals and chemicals added to them in food
processing. the whole process could be designed by a chemical
engineer.

I was told not to go into civil. Too many civil engineers. Heard it is the easiest engineering branch.

After reading more into the different branches of engineering, EE sounds up my alley. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it more or less of improving the overall health of populations being human or not by manipulating the natural environment? Would a EE oversee certain construction jobs or something?
