Haven't taken a math course in a very long time and I'm stuck on a basic problem. How do you add whole numbers to a fraction?

Ex: 10/3 + 4

I know the answer is 22/3 but how was that answer created?

You can either "convert" the improper fraction to a mixed number

or

Convert the whole number into a fraction (with the same denominator) and then add them together

3 goes into 10, 3 times with 1 remainder 3 1/3 or 3.333

3 and 1/3 + 4 = 7 and 1/3 or 7.33

(22/3 = 7.33)

4 = 4/1

To add fractionis they have to have the same denominator

4 = 12/3

10/3 + 12/3 = 22 / 3

This part helped me a lot. Didn't think about making 4 a fraction and finding the LCD. Thanks!

if he's American like myself, I can assure you he's ahead of 95% of the population simply by knowing how to do operations with fractions.
