How do you solve this
5x+22=x^2+8
5x-x^2=14

1) move everything to one side

-x^2 + 5x + 22 - 8 = 0
-x^2 + 5x + 14 = 0

2) either factor it or use the quadratic formula

Move everything to one side. I like to keep the highest factor (x^2 in this case) positive.

1)

x^2 - 5x - 14 = 0
(x - 7) (x+2) = 0
x = 7, x = -2

2)

x^2 - 5x + 14 = 0

You can't factor this, so you must use quadratic formula.

x = (5 +- sqrt(25 - 52))/2
x = 2.5 +- 1.5i * sqrt(3)

#1 can also be solved with the quadratic formula for the same answers, but since you can factor it and factoring is usually simpler, the factoring is shown.
