It's a reaction that has been known to be used in suicides and suicide attempts. It creates significant amounts of Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is dangerous in concentrations over 200 ppm, and deadly over 500 ppm.

It's not excessively dangerous to do this reaction on a small scale with a lot of open space to work with (outdoors, fume hoods, etc).

It's really only dangerous if done in a confined area where the gases can't escape freely (think small bathroom, inside a car, etc).
