if i have the following expression:

x= -6 +- sqrt(64) / 2

can i then rewrite this as:

x=-6 +- 8 / 2 and if so what would be the necessary steps in order to simplify this even further? I am under the impression that I would multiply both the numerator and the denominator by two but I could be wrong.

-6 +- sqrt(64) / 2 = -10 , you must have missed something in your equation i guess?

seems like you have 2 solutions
is the whole thing divided by 2?
2 solutions is just 2 solutions, so write both out

I think saber is on the right track here.

To the OP: The way you have it written out, the whole is not divided by two, but I suspect you got that from the quadratic formula (or completing the square) and the whole thing is supposed to be divided by 2, which I think saber is hinting at.

it would be like this


-6+ 8/2 = -2

-6 - 8/2 = -10

UNLESS the whole thing is in parenthesis

(-6+8)/2 = 1

(-6-8)/2 = -7
