Alright, so I need to do an ethnography for my English Comp class. We have to choose a group to which we don't belong, and I chose atheists. What I need is a few atheists I can question - but I'm not here to argue theology or anything like that. I'm simply attempting to get an objective perspective on atheists as a whole. I want someone who can discuss this with me like a calm, mature, adult. I want to know about things such as your upbringing, why you don't believe in any particular religion, whether you're a violent, sinful, evil, immoral fiend or just someone who doesn't think there's anything more than what we see right here, right now. Any help is much appreciated

Feel free to either PM me or post here if you're willing to help; I'll choose a few people and PM them with some questions. Thank you guys again!

not ahteist but agnostic so i cannot be one of your subjects
just wanted to point out that to have the understanding to be "sinful" one has to be religious
"evil" is very much tainted by religious connotation as well
and "immoral" might be a confusing terminology when one doesn't believe in the same moral system

could even argue about the "object perspective" but i think i gave you enough to digest already

why don't you post your questions?

guess he either wants to avoid having to develop a questionnaire or wants to talk to people before starting one

why don't you post your questions?

/edit: i'm not clear on the definition of athiest. is it simply disbelief in god or is it believing there is no god? i vaguely remember watching penn's vlog and he defined athiest as the former whereas he was a member of the latter

/edit2: nevermind, i think agnostic is the first one. so i cant help either :/

Meant "violent, sinful, evil, immoral fiend" in a facetious way, as I'm a Christian who thinks it's impractical and just plain dumb to accuse someone of being the embodiment of everything that's bad simply because they don't share your beliefs :P
I want to write this in an objective way because, like I said, I'm not here to argue theology. I want FACTS about who these people aren't as much as who they are.

I didn't post my questions because...err... I haven't figured out what they are yet  lol
But I'm coming up with them as we speak.

Also:
atheism: a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

most recently ive been thinking of atheism as a rejection of modern god concepts, especially in comparison to how atheist was originally used to denote those who rejected the Greek gods like not participating in celebrating the gods or offering up tributes, such that some one may be atheistic twords a traditional Abrahamic god, but theistic twords an untraditional Christian god all while holding an agnostic view in reguard to the existence of gods.

in regard to some beliefs, like say scientology im quite atheistic, and in regard to say a deist approach to Christianity, Id say im theistic. Though as far as if a god or gods exist, im defiantly agnostic.

@OP - terrible idea. Atheists are not a unified group, they come from all walks of life and believe many different things. The only thing that unites them is a disbelief in the existence of god or gods.

greeks that didnt participate in celebrations of the gods, ritiruals, sacrafices, and tributes were called atheists.

neitzche and other philosophers that proposed morals systems void of christianity and christian ideals were called atheists.

now all of a sudden atheist can only mean that you deny the existance of any and all gods? I think not, it has been for quite some time the rejection of a specific religion, most oftenly the one held by the majority.

as such, one can be an atheist, theist, and agnostic all at the same time.

Why do atheists have to argue or explain themselves or discredit others in any thread or conversation on the internet...i swear you guys just LIKE to argue to make your dick feel bigger...if you don't do this or correct others when they call you agnostic or vice versa, thank you god (no pun intended)
