agree with that but some components are:

- communication software
- interface
- modem or similar
- cable or network

actually if you want to reduce it to three components, then it would be the following (for computer to computer communication):

- communication software (eg tcp/ip)
- interface (eg usb or parallel port)
- cable (eg usb-cable or cross-over cable)

usually there are more than three components involved (could be hundreds if you go via a public network): modems, routers, repeaters, servers, etc etc etc
