i don't want to do it either, but if you just want to know one side, E*A + 2(G*H) seams like a fair estimation.

as far as estimating the head hole, perhaps its similar to H*G? so:

was looking for a rough estimate of area, not the formulas. I do appreciate you posting though. I'm wanting to know an estimated area in sq inches because I am wanting to make a chain mail shirt and need to know roughly how many links I will need. they are 1/4th inch links so 4 links = 1 sq inch.

If I am able to do it decently, I may be able to convince a friend of mine to have me do a shirt for him made of .999 silver for most links and do his companies name in .9999 gold links (he is a gold and silver bullion dealer). I saw something that put an estimate of 1.5 sq yards of fabric for a mens xl shirt, but I'd just prefer to get an slightly more accurate answer, and in sq inches. At 1.5 sq yards it would be a 9,000 $ (and roughly 24 lb) shirt of fine silver.

well you got a problem. first off, it takes about twenty 1/4 inch diameter rings to cover a square inch...additionally even a simple 4 in 1 chain mail pattern probably has at least 40% overlap...

Currently I have roughly 9 sq inches of it finished. Granted you are correct there is some overlap though. With scalemail style it seems to use a lot more rings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MW-JQ35rs9c but I wouldn't want to do that first. So while I might not be doing the style you imagined I would be using, I do not see it as a problem.
