a chemist added 17.8g of salt to 150.0 ml of a salt solution of unknown density. the resulting solution had a final volume of 165.9 ml and a density of 1.22 g/ ml. what was the density of the original salt solution?

Take the initial grams of salt added to the solution and that + the density youre trying to find, lets say d(salt) * 150ml, because thats the volume of the solution and that should equal 1.22g/ml*165.9ml because that is ending grams of solution. so the equation will be 17.8g + d(salt) * 150 = 1.22g/ml * 165.9ml. so then d(salt) = ((1.22g/ml * 165.9ml) - 17.8g) / 150)

You need to know the mass, let's call it M, of the original solution. You back-calculate it from the density of the new solution:

(M + 17.8 grams) / (165.9 mL) = 1.22 g/mL

Step 1: Solve for M
M = (1.22 * 165.9) - 17.8 grams = 184.598 grams

Step 2: Divide M by the original volume to get the original density, D:
D = 184.598 grams / 150.0 mL = 1.231 g/mL
