put your function into that definition, then simplify the limit.

#2: find the derivative, set it equal to zero. solve for slope. then you can use basic algebra using whatever form you want . not sure what the hell "a" represents. i assume x = a

I don't even know what the derivitive means! this is a stupid extra credit problems!

i think the point of extra credit is to learn something new.....if you dont want to learn it, then don't do it. it's just extra credit after all.

The derivative is a method of finding the slope of a function at a specific point.

In a polynomial such as the one described in Problem 2, you would simply use the power rule on each of the terms.

So dy/dx = 9x^2 - 8x

Again, that equation will give you the slope of the original function, y, at any point you plug in. So plug in x = 2, and dy/dx = 20. So the slope of the tangent line is 20, all you have to do is find the rest of the linear equation.

Think about why that wouldn't be the asnwer. The derivative is an EQUATION that gives the slope at any point of the original function. The only way the derivative is going to be a constant is if the original function had a constant slope, in this case y=2x.

Also, for your benefit, here's the power rule:

f(x) = ax^(b)
f'(x) = ab*x^(b-1)
