Hey

I need to find the molar mass of a hydrate, which is a salt with water inside the crystal structure.

Basically, we need to determine the number of moles of water per 1mole of the anhydrous substance.

The molar mass of the HYDRATE is 170.48 (given), but we don't know the substance. We cant cheat either! I know it is Copper II Chloride, only because I cheated.

I need to figure out the molar mass of the unknown substance, but I am not sure how to do that.



I can provide a ton of information that you might need, but I felt like this is enough to solve the problem.

So you need to figure out the mass of anhydrous CuCl2 just from the mass of the CuCl2.2H2O? Post an image of the actual question.

Is that all info that's provided? seems quite inadequate...

normally hydrates don't go past 6mole h2o per mole of anhydrous.
So when 1:1, anhydrous would have molar mass of 170.48-18
and if it's 2:1 anhydrous would have molar mass of 170- 2(18)
etc..

then try for different combinations of ionic compounds. I wouldn't expect the compound to go past the 4th period. So below 120g/mol. also more than 60g/mol assuming that 6:1 h2o:anhydrous is the upper limit.
