Below is the chemical reaction that takes place during alcoholic fermentation.

C6H12O6 ------> 2 C2H5OH + 2 CO2

C2H5OH is the chemical formula for ethanol (common drinking alcohol) and CO2 is carbon dioxide which is a gas. In this experiment, you will be using special glassware which deprives the yeast of oxygen so that fermentation can take place. The presence of bubbles in the fermentation glassware indicates that fermentation has taken place. These bubbles are formed by which of the two fermentation products mentioned above?

pretty sure its the carbon dioxide?

thanks.

That's called anaerobic fermentation. And yes the gas (bubbles) is CO2. This creates a positive gas pressure during fermentation. People use a so-called fermentation lock to allow the CO2 to slowly evacuate while the O2 does not come in the reaction mixture while the fermentation is going on.
