The Dependent variable is getting a job offer (or not)
The Independent variables are race and criminal record

There are other potential independent variables such as experience, appearance, resume quality that the researcher tried to control for by making them constant across applicants

the independent variables are the things the experimenter has control over. For this experiment I would say the experimenter has control over the race and criminal background of the job applicants (she also had control over their genders and ages but from her description it seems like these values were not varied so lets forget about them).

the dependent variables are variables which can be calculated given the independent variables. While it is a little muddy in this case, it seems that "probability of receiving a call back" would be the dependent variable (she didn't really go into the criteria for what defined a successful application process).
