What Can Happen When Things Go Viral

How an Endust Facebook Giveaway Went Viral

On January 30, 2012, the Endust Facebook page started a coupon giveaway. The question was simple: Do you listen to music while cleaning? If so, what do you listen to? Whoever answered received a $5 coupon for an Endust product of their choice.

The offer went viral, so viral, in fact, that the Social Marketing team at Single Throw Internet Marketing was forced to give it a deadline, fearing they would run out of coupons. The offer was picked up by twelve different Facebook fan pages and shared, driving traffic to the Endust Facebook page. The social media campaign returned over 1,700 responses in the allotted time.

The numbers were great news for Endust and provided Single Throw Internet Marketing with a unique opportunity as well. The Social Marketing team at Single Throw had a huge influx of traffic to the fan page, as people commented, “Liked”, and shared the post. Rising to the occasion, the team promptly and enthusiastically commented on and attended to all 1,700 posts. The team also responded to comments from people who were dissatisfied about missing the deadline, or who had questions about how they would receive their coupons. For an unprecedented social media event, everything went off without a hitch. The Social Marketing team at Single Throw set the bar pretty high for future engagements. The team's responses were not only prompt, professional, and friendly, but they also encouraged further communication and engagement from fans and followers—which, when dealing with upwards of 1,700 comments, is a feat in and of itself.

The cyber magic of the giveaway, though, came from the coupon going viral. How did the Endust giveaway get picked up and shared by twelve other Facebook fan pages? There's really no way to trace it without advanced logarithms, overcomplicated computer programs, and some cartwheels. Instead, let's make an educated guess. More than likely, one of the twelve fan pages had “Liked” Endust in the past. Endust showed up in their News Feed, and since the offer was almost too good to be true, the fan page shared it. It's likely that another fan page had “Liked” that first page, the Endust offer showed up, and again it was shared.

Like a chain reaction, the Endust offer spread to countless users across Facebook in only a few short hours. This is social media. A single idea, born in the backroom of an office—I wonder what kind of music people listen to while cleaning?—turned into a social media campaign gone viral.

While it's impossible to determine what exactly will go viral—Justin Bieber, Charlie the Unicorn, Christian the lion, or a coupon giveaway for Endust is anybody's guess. None of it could have been predicted. But think about it like this—connected as we are today, it's more than likely that your company, your giveaway, will get to the people who will care most. It'll go viral in all the important places, getting your brand name out in front of people and raising awareness. Social media is the community sharing place of today, and offers like this demonstrate how incredibly effective it can be.

A.What kind of e-marketing promotions were used?

B. What is the positioning of the product?

C. Discuss the e-marketing model they are using. Why?

D. Who is their target market? What may be the population they are targeting? What is the internet penetration they have? What is their Economic Environment makeup? What could be the possible opportunities and limitations?

(Look up the Endust website and try to answer the questions by analysis of your findings.)

How was the buzz created? Why did it go out of control?
Identify a viral video/advertisement/ campaign and discuss why that became a success. What limitations do you notice that could be fixed? (Send me the link of the video/campaign/ad to see what you are talking about)
If you were doing an e-marketing campaign what activities would you choose? What medias would you choose? Why?
