As stated in "Wedding Traditions and Customs around the World", the word "wed" is derived from the ancient Greek word for "pledge." That's what a wedding is suppose to be, no matter what culture, race, or where it takes place. It's suppose to be true and faithful and loving to another human being (www.worldweddingtraditions.com). But on the contrary, some places like the United States, people/couples seem to think marriage and/or mate selection is much like a joke or a game. Unlike some places like India where a great percentage of marriages are arranged, the US gets to choose who they want to date, or hang out with, or hook up with. It is not surprising that nearly three-fourths of the population of India believe that arranged marriages are more successful than marriages in the West {US, Canada, etc.} (Schwartz and Scott, 2012). A huge percentage of Americans in the US seem to take relationships the wrong way and couples also seem to manipulate each other non-stop, much like a game. Some seem to think that dating is simply about fun, recreation, having sex, competing, and most of all, they think of it as a popularity contest, and in no way is it tied in to the goal of marriage (Schwartz and Scott, 2012). There seems to be no rules that govern the "game" because everyone has there own entitled opinion on what they perceive as dating and mate selection, and at any certain point, one gives up. Older males seem to take the romantic way a majority of the time by buying flowers for the female or taking them to a fancy restaurant for dinner, yet on the other hand there are a handful of females, so called "cougars" who would rather date the younger generation of males because the younger generation of males look up to the older females for advice and guidance
