I need the following questions answered, will pay considerable fg!
Part I
1. Summarise what you learn about Achilles’ life from the flashbacks in this section.
2. Find references in Part I that indicate Achilles is on the beach from early morning to full daylight.
3. Pg 3&4 mentions “this man” and “the man” – no names. What is the effect of witholding the name of the character?
4. When Achilles returns from his desperate dragging of the body around the walls he is “like a man who has climbed out of his grave”(p34). What does this mean, and what does it tell us about Achilles as a man?
5. How does Achilles react to these events & what do his reactions reveal about his character?
a) Agammemnon’s claiming of the slave girl Briseis for himself

Patroclus’ death
c) Patroclus’ funeral ceremony
d) Hector’s warning that Achilles’ own death is near
e) His realisation he can’t feel the rage against Hector that he should be feeling.
f) His discovery that the Gods are defying him by protecting Hector’s body.
Part II
1. How had Priam been ransomed? How did this experience as a child change his life? Why is Hecuba reluctant to hear the story?
2. Hecuba says to Priam “But you are not any man” (p59). Why does he say that Achilles might welcome “the chance to break free of the obligation of being always the hero”(p59)?
3. Why is Priam so angry when his son brings him the ceremonial chariot, and Idaeus?
4. How does Priam react to these events & what do his reactions reveal about his character?
a) The appearance of the goddess Iris

Hecuba’s response to his plan.
c) The objections of his sons & advisors
d) The arrival of the first mode of transport chosen for him
e) The appearance of Somax and his wagon
Part III
1. Somax is entirely Malouf’s invention. What is the point of his character? Why would Malouf write such emphasis on ordinary details such as the griddlecakes?
2. List the events in the journey that change Priam’s perspective on life. Why do they have this effect?
3. Is the fact Somax has lost children relevant?
4. What indications are given to suggest their escort may be more than he appears?
Part IV
1. Why does Achilles first believe the ‘apparition” is Patroclus, then Peleus?
2. Why does Achilles feel at peace when he looks on hector’s body when he had not done so previously?
3. Why did Malouf include the scene in the laundry hut?
4. This scene has been described as “intensely moving”. How do you respond? What is it that moves readers?
Part V
1. What effect have the events of the previous night had on Priam, Achilles and Somax?
2. At the beginning of Part V Somax and Priam are crossing a battlefield. What details does Melouf provide that evoke a sense of waste?
3. The forthcoming death of Priam is a revenge killing – revenge for the death of one’s father was just as “noble” as death on the battlefield. How “noble” is this death, really?
4. For Priam, the return home is a “provisional triumph” (p208). Whose words are these? What is the significance of this statement?
5. The story ends with Somax – apparently the least important character and the only one not in the Iliad. Why has Malouf chosen to end with Somax?
