There's nothing tricky about it. .5x^2 + 1.5x - Y = 0
x = (-1.5 +/- sqrt(1.5^2 +2Y))

Then simplify
You clearly just plugged it into wolfram alpha and failed to distinguish between an exact answer and an approximation)
