Multiple Choice Questions - 5 Fg Each, (4, 5, 6)

1.Greg is pushing two blocks (Ma = 18 kg and Mb = 14kg) horizontally across a floor with a force of 85N as illustrated. The blocks are speeding up as they move to left. Assume that friction and drag may be ignored.

B: Determine the acceleration of each block. Clearly indicate both magnitude and direction. You muse use the information from your Free Body Diagrams drawn above (Have them written down, if needed I can post them up with an actual picture, just let me know) to solve for the acceleration. Show all necessary calculations.

A) Calculate the net horizontal force acting on each block. Clearly indicate both magnitude and direction. Which block experiences the greatest net force? Why? Provide an explanation with all necessary calculations.

2. Ella is pulling her sister, Patience, who is on a sled on a snow covered sidewalk with a rope and force of 75 Newtons. Patience and the sled (mass of 36kg) are speeding up as they slide through the snow. Assume that the drag force is so small it can be ignored. The coefficients of friction for the surfaces of the sled on the snow are 0.12 (Static) and 0.05 (Kinetic). Consider Patience and the sled as one complete system.

A) (Done - Draw free body diagram - Don't need this already done but if needed I can post it for you if needed for calculations)

B: Use Free body diagram and apply Newton's 2nd law to determine the net horizontal force (magnitude and direction) acting on patience and the sled.

C) Calculate the resulting acceleration (magnitude and direction) of Patience and the sled.

D) Assuming that Patience and the sled started from rest and the acceleration calculated above remains constant, what is the velocity of both after moving 5.3 meters.

3. A child twirls his yo-yo horizontally about his head rather than using it properly. The yo-yo has a mass of 0.200 kg and is attached to a string 0.800 meters long.

A) if the yo-yo makes a complete revolution each second. What tension must exist in the string?
B: If the tension in the string is doubled, what is the speed of the yo-yo?
