Ok so heres the deal, Im building frames for my canvas works that will be in my senior show.

I have all the dimensions for each piece, I need that many inches of good + 2 inches per piece ( to count in for overlap on the corners so it fits nicely )

the thing I need help with, is when I'm actually at home depot I need to cut the pieces of wood so it fits in my car. I need help with figuring out what size to cut each piece so its efficient and I'm still able to get the most out of it, not so I have a foot or two left over. If that makes any sense?

can you try rephrasing your question more clearly?

ok so I need to find out the total inches needed to buy to frame my paintings. I listed the dimensions of each painting but also keep in mind each painting needs an extra 2 inches for the corners.

So first of all I need the total number of inches.

Secondly, I need to know how big/small to cut the pieces to fit into my car while still being efficient. I cant go and buy the 30ft piece from home depot and drive off. I need to cut it. But I have to know how big to cut it so later when I cut it down for the smaller paintings, I wont have alot left over or left too short.

The green is your canvas/art/photo/whatever, I'm assuming these are the dimensions you listed.
The purple is a spacing around the canvas.
The brown is the wooden frame.

To answer you question I will need to know the width (w) of the frame (brown), and the width (s) of the spacing (purple).

If you don't want a purple area, then just say s = 0

I can't provide those details without the information I asked for. The length of the sides are dependent on the width of the sides...

Also it matter how you want the corners to be:

its going to be like the first drawing there.
I think the width is quarter inch

Then the length you need to cut each board (L), where
Dl = long dimension of artwork
Dw = short dimension of artwork


L = Dl + 2s + 2*sqrt(2)*w

and

L = Dw + 2s + 2*sqrt(2)*w


The length of a piece of wood required to make these pieces (WL) is:

WL = 2(Dl + 2s + sqrt(2)*w) + 2(Dw + 2s + sqrt(2)*w) + sqrt(2)*w

You want to minimize the cost. That requires details. If you had given me the 2 simple numbers I asked for, when I asked for them, you would have your answer by now.... Good luck...

Oh and for what it is worth... I'm not a carpenter, but putting 4 pieces of quarter inch wood around a 16 square foot canvas seems to me like it will create a pretty flimsy end product...
