AI can do the coding at this point there is no reason for people to learn it

If you can't understand the code AI provides you how do you know it works? Once it does work and has bugs what are you going to do? Ask AI why the bugs are in the script it sent you?

I work with SQL and nothing is 1 to 1 from the internet to what I work with. AI can help, but you all still need to know what it means.

NeetCodeIO did a very good video on this that hits the nail on the head for anyone working as a software engineer. Search "Why is everyone LYING?" by NeatCodeIO on youtube. (Not sure if I'm allowed to post links for that here. So just look it up.)

It's impressive what AI can do. It can answer interview level questions, explain most code snippets, and do a lot of useful stuff. But it's a decade away from being able to generate an entire piece of software. And then there's maintaining the software of bugs, new features, etc.

It's funny because in that video he talks about how AI can't even be used to recreate his website yet I made it easily within a few hours lol

It's impressive what it could do tbh. But it's not even remotely close to having any of the functionality. It also can't interpret the flow diagram properly.

And this is the "most advanced coding AI" around.

This is like a little kid writing a cute one page story that sort of talks about "Harry potter" because it mentions a wizard with a scar. It doenst mean they have the capability to write a fully fledged novel.

No, I'm not talking about the crappy one the guy made in this vid, I made one myself. It copies the rotating flow diagram using d3js, and uses monaco editor for the coding part etc. You can't just one shot ask it to build the website thought. You have to go part by part, being very specific and intentional about what you're asking: if you know how to prompt it properly and you can make some pretty impressive stuff.

But the point is that this tech is just in it's infancy. People saying it's just aren't looking at the rate of progress. It's not about where it is now, but where it will be in 3, 5, 10 years etc. We are already seeing the job market for coders heavily affected. Boot camps literally all dying. No junior roles available. Don't bet on it being garbage forever.

Oh I agree in the next 5 to 10 years well probably continue to see significant progress.

But you're going to need a good understanding of computing to even interact with the AI in a way that produces enterprise software. Let alone maintaining it and promoting it for adequate changes.

Also people need to build the AI models and do research to drive the advancements.

I don't think software engineering is going to decline in that timeframe. The type of work may shift. But I suspect the industry will continue to grow.
