You can't use limits in this omfg limits are used in an equation such as 1 divided by infinity has a limit of 0 but 0.999... is a single number, not an equation so is therefore equal to 1.

If sum of Geometric series hasn't mentioned it for some obscure reason:

.999999... = the sum of (1/10^n))*9 with n from one to infinity.

This expands to:
.9 + .09 + .009 + .0009 + ... and so forth.

Because this is a geometric series, we can use the formula:

1 - r

where

a = .9 (first term)
r = .1 (forgot the word for it, but its the constant that is raised to the nth power)

Thus we have
.9
.9

which is equal to 1.
