1/3 = 0.333333333333...
2/3 = 0.666666666666...
3/3 = 1

3/3 = 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3

And since 1/3 = 0.3333...

Then:

3/3 = 0.33333... + 0.33333... + 0.33333...

So:

1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 0.33333 + 0.33333... + 0.33333...

Now if all of the above is true, then:

1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1

So...

0.3333... + 0.3333... +0.3333... = 1

But we know 0.3333... + 0.3333... + 0.3333... = 0.9999... as well

So, we can conclude from all of the redundancies above, that 0.9999... = 1

It's all redundancies to help the retarded mind.

Incorrect, I'm afraid.

0.99999999999... =/= 1

Because 0.3333333333... etc =/= 1/3
and 0.666666666666... etc. =/= 2/3

Let more chaos ensue!

Care to elaborate on your thoughts after reading all of this? Or are you going to try and get your locked/scammer tag removed?

i think he copy/pasted it w/o reading it first

if it makes the people who think .99 repeating doesn't equal 1 feel any better, even though mathematicians agree that it does in fact equal 1, they acknowledge that it's a serious problem. if you ever take real analysis, a much better foundation for the real number system than the "sum of fractions" one is developed so that this kind of inconsistency (having more than one representation for a number) doesn't happen. so mathematicians agree with you that it's pathological and doesn't make sense, but their response (creating a more rigorous definition) is more constructive than the 0.9... = 1 deniers (just shake your head and ignore proofs)

it's not a very good question. it's just divisive, as people with naive experience in mathematics refuse to accept things that intuition doesn't confirm.

Exactly, why should anybody read all of that without even them reading what they pasted firstly.

I mean look at this particular sentence he pasted.

Suppose you have a bar of pure gold, containing six million atoms. Through the use of technology, you separate the hunk into three equal pieces, each containing exactly two million gold atoms. I would argue that each piece constitutes 0.333... of the original bar. Care to prove me wrong? Gustave the Steel (talk) 15:04, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

I mean what the fuck does 15:04, 15 August 2009 suppose to mean anyway? I could never understand the concept based upon that theory about whatever that means. That confused me to heights way beyond Balakain's imagination. I just can't believe the transendence of the conversatory ritual that was supposedly pasted onto that curriculum found its way into the confines of this coordinates without the adequate permission of the original thread poster.
