Hilarious how people (who think they know something about maths) can make 30 pages out of something Wikipedia can tell you in a minute: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/0.999...

0.(9) is 1, get your concepts of infinity together.

x = 1
9x = 9
9x + x = 9.000 + 0.999
10x = 9.999
x = 0.999

Pick out the flaw in that logic.

This is a bit tricky, since you assume x = 1, but at some point, you suddenly assume it's equal to 0,9999...
There is a flaw. It works only the other way around (starting from where you ended).

you assumed in step 3 that x=0.999... , which breaks your proof.

Good job, both of you's. This equation is a one way implication. It only works one way but not the other way.

Now remember what our third grade teacher said about equations that only work one way but not the other?

I don't need to recall anything. I know that an implication, cannot be a cause, but an implication, can result from a cause.

Why are you trying to disprove that?

Yeah, let it die. Or let the original creator of this thread come in and see what he has made this thread become by making it a thread about this debate to begin with.
