For the second question your correct I didn't read it all it says average rate of change for century continues. So you just compute slope using points (1905,1006) and (2005,1129) to compute slope for avg change over century. Then do slope which is average change per year and multiple by number of years from 2005 to 2009 to find estimated population in 2009.

Ok so,

1129-1006/2005-1905 = 1.23 x 4?

Cool, got it. Thanks!

Derivatives are kicking my butt.

There are two ways to solve this. My professor recommends factoring, yet I can't figure it out with factoring.

Another way is setting the equation equal to the slope.

Which I did here:
3x^2+18x+33=9

How do I solve that? It seems like basic algebra but I can't figure it out.

F'(x)=3x^2+18x+36

You can only factor something set =to zero so

3x^2+18x+36=9
X^2+6x+12=3 (Factor out 3 of eq)
X^2+6x+9=0 (subtract 3)
(X+3)^2=0 (factor)
X=-3. (Solve)

Check solution and it works.

Set the derivative to equal to 9
3x^2+18X+36=9

Rearrange
3x^2+18x+27=0

divide by 3

3(x^2+6x+9)=0

3(x+3)^2=0

X=-3
