yeah, Area of rectangle is length * width... the width is the same for all of them in the first example = pi/4....

the length (or height) is the hard part... it is the value of the function at the distance in question.... the function is f(x) = sin(x).... so the length (or height) of the first rectangle is f(pi/4) = sin(pi/4)
the length of the 2nd rectangle is f(2*pi/4) = sin(2*pi/4)
the length of the 3rd rectangle is f(3*pi/4) = sin(3*pi/4)


the area of the first rectangle is: sin(pi/4) * pi/4
the area of the first rectangle is: sin(2*pi/4) * pi/4
the area of the first rectangle is: sin(3*pi/4) * pi/4

evaluate those, and sum them, convert to decimal and round it as instructed and you'll have an estimate of the area under the curve.

dont you move the decimal place to the right one?
the example problems she had given me always moves them to the right..

Can you give me a logical reason to move it? Do you move the decimal place when you calculate the area of a rectangle? Do you move the decimal place when you add 3 numbers? No. So don't do it now. (Sorry if that seems kind of harsh). :evil:

Think about this like a real world question. You got a room that is the shape that curve draws. Your boss wants to know how many square feet is in that room so you can go buy some carpet to carpet the room. You don't know how to calculate the area exactly so you do the next best thing and divide it into rectangles (which you know how to calculate area for). Then you just add up the area of all the rectangles and go buy that much carpet. If you shift the decimal point, you will buy 10 as much carpet as you need and get fired!

I hope you understand that you were trying to find/estimate the area under the curve
give the limits, of pi, and 1, the maximum area of that would just be 1*pi, or around 3
so, an answer of 18 is just ridiculous

No, I can understand you becoming tired of my dumb questions
and I had a problem done earlier and I was studying it, and the areas were
5 / (5/2) / (5/3) / (5/3) that gives you 25/24 which is 1.0417 but the correct answer was 10.417

yeah sorry about that, just confused with how the hw was done and this
I try to do most of my work based off other hw's

you realize those are plus signs right...? 5 + 5/2 + 5/3 + 5/4. every single term is over 1, not sure how you got 25/24
