Fuck the mathematicians who've studied this stuff for decades of their life; they're all retarded and wrong.

I don't think anyone alive now actually studied this problem for decades. It usually takes a mathematician about 5 minutes to figure out that it's true on seeing it for the first time.

I wasn't talking about this problem, I was talking about the topics in general ("this stuff"): infinite sums and whatever else.

WHY THE FUCK IS THIS THREAD STILL ALIVE. IT DOES EQUAL 1, you retards.

1/3 = .333333
2/3 = .666666

u add them u get

3/3 = .999999

THE END !

Okay riddle me this.
Does 4.59238 = 11.283766? When it comes to numbers that *could* go to infinity, these are pretty close. And you seem pretty adamant about naming things that are close as "the very same thing". So I suppose any number in respect to another number is pretty close when compared to how far apart it *could* be.

EDIT: We got a retard here:

"WHY THE FUCK IS THIS THREAD STILL ALIVE. IT DOES EQUAL 1, you retards.

1/3 = .333333

Wrong.
1/3=.33333.....
2/3= .6666666....
1/3 + 2/3 = 3/3
.333333 +.666666 infinite times = 1. Not .9999
3/3=1 NOT .99999...
Put it into your calculator. you'll see.

EDIT2: Please, don't get me wrong. I FULLY understand what you guys are saying. And in theory it's not the proofs that are wrong. It's the fact you are doing this in regards to a non-finite number. It's just not possible. It's the same as proving 1=2 by dividing by zero. In the second sense, you're doing something not allowed aka dividing by 0. in the first, you're referring to a number that DOESN'T EVEN EXIST.

Fuck 'em.

We need more 18 year olds telling us what is and isn't the case in science and mathematics.

Dude IKR. I would have had the problems to life figured out by now if I wasn't hindered with school.

Hell let's throw this down here:

"According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a syllogism is "a form of deductive reasoning consisting of a major premise, a minor premise, and a conclusion" (p. 1230). Syllogisms are used to guide thinking from the general to the specific. They can, however, contain faulty logic and overgeneralizations.

Byrnes (1988) suggests that preservice students analyze syllogisms for faulty reasoning. Listed below are some examples:

Tomatoes taste salty.
Tomatoes are red.
All red foods taste salty.

Bobby stole a bicycle.
Bobby is poor.
All poor people are thieves.

Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and Richard Speck were mass murderers.
Dahmer, Gacy, and Speck were white men.
All white men are mass murderers."

Your guys' logic makes sense, but doesn't make it right.......

tl;dr
x = 0.99999...
10x = 9.9999....
10x - x = 9.99999.... - 0.9999...
9x = 9
x = 1
