Initially, I thought it was 5. It was a success, however some people thought of it to be a disaster. The text states that serious environmental problems result from the chemical dependency of the new crop strains.. And it said one of the major problems researchers faced was the fact that higher yields could not be attained [...] the solution was to cross-breed new "dwarf" crop strains that would respond to heavy chemical fertilization, etc.

That makes me believe the answer is 1. Relied in part on newly developed varieties of crops.
