You are pitting two infinities against each other, no one will win. And, no i dont care what wikipedia says, because sometimes wikipedia is wrong. Like when it said that the universe may possibly have an infinite life. Dear oh dear, what were they thinking...

if 0.999999... would be 1

yes there is a undefinable hair in there, but for all intents and purposes, 1 = .999...

It is true that .999.... = 1. In fact the standard definition of 1 is .999... The argument where you take 1/3 = .3333.... then multiply by 3 to get 1 = .9999... is correct, but proving that you can do that it is a little involved (and if you do it, one of the intermediate steps could be used to directly show .999... = 1). If you all want a careful proof, I can give you one, but it necessarily involves real analysis (you have to know how to define the number 1).

I just want to be clear on this point though. Mathematicians do all agree that .999... = 1. Not just for practical purposes, but identically. .9999... IS 1. There is no distinction between them whatsoever. For all real numbers a, 1 - .999... < a (this is the definition of equality of two numbers).

then 10x=9.999999....

10x-x=9.99999... -0.9999999
9x=9
x=1=0.99999...
