(e^x) / (1+4e^(-x) = 2

I'm just guessing here, and I haven't written anything down to confirm.

Multiply both sides by your denominator, then take the ln of each side. I think that will get all the x variables out of exponents. Then should be easy to solve.

yeah should give

e^x = 2 + 8*e^(-x)

x = ln(2) + 3*ln(2) - x

2x = 4*ln(2)

x = 2ln(2)

oddly enough the boundaries of the various fields are not seen the same way everywhere in the world

though i think he's american because his avatar is the the symbol (i forgot the right word) that represents an american football team. not that non-americans can't like american sports.

seeing your two comments i had a quick check & YES, "Jowy" the op states to be norwegian
and 'calculus' is the thread title (so even if "jtd" is american that might have fooled him)
btw, where i went to high school "e" and the various logarithmic functions were taught in calculus

its a "pre-calculus" topic here in the states. They try to get you comfortable with log/exponential/trigonometric functions in that class, then calculus I is the limit/derivative/integrals using those functions. At least that is how I remember it.
