Frankenstein Essay
In Marry Shelly’s award winning novel Frankenstein, Marry Shelly try’s to change our viewpoint on how we judge others. Society judges based on: beauty, rank, and wealth. People that are born with all of these traits are given special privileges. On the other end of the spectrum, others are judged unfairly because of this system and are outcast of society.
The creature is a hideous beast and because of so is shunned from the public eyes. He is born into a life of struggle from the start. The creature is penniless, grotesque and alone. Everyone he meets including his own family disowns him. His lack of knowledge or understanding forces the creature to act upon his basic emotions. His emotions cause the creature to do unforgivable acts even against his conscience. The fear his stature provokes causes him to be stoned, shot, and banished from neighboring villages.
The Delacey family is humble, poor, and unified. They work together as a team to support the family. They have good morals and help the blind old man the most they can. Even without the benefits of wealth they still find serenity in the love they share. especially Felix and Safie. Their love is what sparked the creatures interest in pursuing a friend.
Robert Walton like Victor Frankenstein was also given many extra opportunities in life. Robert is wealthy enough to lead an expedition to discover a new passageway through the north pole. Robert has Margret’s friendship to help ease his loneliness on his journey in the open sea. The only thing he doesn’t have yet is fame, although, he has the ambition to attain it. His ambition puts the lives of many others in unnecessary risk, and his crew force him to turn back in fear of the unknown.
Victor Frankenstein was given all the opportunities for success in life, yet still becomes an outcast himself. His family rank and wealth helps him to get the education he needs, but in his quest for knowledge he creates his own demise. With the creature came responsibility and that is new to the creator. Victor ignores the consequences of creating life and messing with nature and is exiled himself to an eternal life of loneliness and disparity.
Society judges each other unfairly based on some things we cant control. You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and money doesn’t always buy happiness. No one wants to be alone, so we create a safety net of family and friends to help us for that much needed occasional support. Outcasts are tragically only created by society when they are neglected and abandoned when they need comforting the most.
