He knew they weren't. .. and so did steve which is why he bought them.. stnicks story is that he poofed lldnicks imps because he wanted to discredit lldnick because lld nick was doing the same thing.. the imps nick supposedly sold to steve were "another" pair he had.
Truth is the pair steve got were almost certainly lldnicks and Nick just didn't want to admit that they really hadn't poofed..
