They updated move damage the other day. Hyper beam and dragon claw do pretty similar dps.

Dragon breath as primary attack is necessary ofc over steel wing.

I also have a gyarados, currently cp 1837 (around 82% IV) which has dragon breath and dragon pulse. Is it worth keep upgrading this, or should i keep my dust/candies, and try to get one with dragon breath/hydro pump, or what do you guys think?

I wouldn't waste dust on upgrading gyarados currently. His primary attack doesn't get a STAB bonus, and outputs low dps. Hydro pump is his best secondary currently.

Definitely keep him though. Further patches may introduce more nerfs, buffs, changes, etc. Who knows, maybe Pokemon will get 4 moves (2 defensive, 2 offensive), so the game becomes a mix between mashing and strategy.

As things stand currently, Gyarados sucks balls but is worth keeping. I'm saving all my gyarados candy in case they buff gyarados or give him more moves. Idk why he's flying/water, should be dragon/water.
